From the Principal’s Desk – 26 October, 2017
I am proud to announce that we recently received a letter from the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) informing us that Hout Bay International School has officially been granted MYP Candidacy status following our application submission. This is the first step towards becoming an authorised IB World School offering the Middle Years Programme (MYP). Achieving this authorisation (aimed for 2020) will ensure that HBIS becomes a full IB Continuum School offering the following IB programmes: PYP, MYP and DP – the only school in South Africa that will do so.
I am not sure if many people realise the significance of this and how important it is that we promote and share the good news of the “product” that is on offer at HBIS. The importance of the IB curriculum worldwide is illustrated by the following facts (taken from ibo.org):
- On 12 October 2017, there were 6,282 programmes being offered worldwide, across 4,775 schools.
- Between 2012 and 2017, the number of IB programmes (PYP, MYP, DP or CP) offered worldwide has grown by 39.3%.
Internationally, the IB continues to grow steadily based on the solid educational principles and enquiring type of curriculum that is proving time and time again to effectively prepare students for life in the 21st century. HBIS is uniquely positioned to become a leader and champion of all things IB in southern Africa and we have a duty and responsibility to really understand the programmes on offer in order to effectively share the benefits of this type of education with those around us.
In a seemingly unstable global environment where politics and ethics seem divorced from each other, where global economies are taking serious strain and mother nature is wrecking havoc in country after counrty around the world, the one thing we can take full control of is the type of education we offer our children. Beyond the final grades a student will receive when they graduate from HBIS after completing their Diploma years, there is so much more that they take with them that cannot be quantified – the characteristics of the IB Learner Profile, the embodiment of CAS which should inspire and motivate them for the rest of their lives and the skills obtained to be successful in whatever field a child chooses to pursue. This depth and breadth of the programmes cannot be underestimated. The preparation our students receive can only bode well for their futures.
And as Malcom X so rightly said “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”.
Thank you for choosing an IB education!
