Welcome to HBIS & chelo!
Chelo stands for Children of Hout Bay Education and Learning Opportunity. We are a group of volunteers, mostly parents from Hout Bay International School, who work with the school to provide children from previously disadvantaged communities of Hout Bay with a world-class education.
The school provides the scholarships, but chelo covers all the other school costs – textbooks, uniforms, extra-curricular classes, stationery, mentorship, laptops and data. On average we need at least R200,000 per year to support our current cohort of 12 students.
We need your support. We need at least 50 percent of the parent body to donate at least R50 a month or R600 per year to keep our students in HBIS.
Before 2020, we had two in-person fundraising events, including our end of year Christmas Carols. But since the 2020 pandemic stopped the world in its tracks, we’ve relied on our second-hand school clothing sales, Civvies Days, and profits from our MySchool Card facility to sustain us. We need parents to help us get recurring funding. We’re calling on HBIS parents to join us in our 50/50 Campaign to ensure we can sustain and grow our programme for the amazing students of chelo.
Please click on the link below to see how you can help – from supporting our second-hand school clothing sales, to obtaining a MySchool Card, to making a donation, no matter how small – your support helps create a brighter future for our students, our community of Hout Bay and our beautiful country.
