“The aim of the IBDP is to produce students that show the qualities of the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile.”
Preparing for the World: The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a rigorous and stimulating two-year pre-university programme for students aged 16–19, designed to prepare them for success at leading universities worldwide and beyond. Offered at IB World Schools, the IBDP promotes academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and personal growth, while developing the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. Students graduate as knowledgeable, principled, and globally minded young adults, well equipped for the demands of higher education and life in a global society.
A Broad and Rigorous International Curriculum
The IB Diploma Programme curriculum provides a balanced and comprehensive academic experience that supports both depth and breadth of learning. Students study six subjects across six subject groups, with three subjects at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). This structure allows students to specialise in areas of strength while maintaining a broad, internationally focused education.
In addition to subject studies, all IB Diploma students complete the IB Core, which is central to the programme’s philosophy:
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK): An interdisciplinary course that develops critical thinking skills and encourages students to reflect on the nature of knowledge across disciplines.
- Extended Essay (EE): A 4,000-word independent research project that builds advanced research, academic writing, and analytical skills, preparing students for university-level study.
- Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): A core component that promotes personal development, wellbeing, and social responsibility, encouraging students to engage meaningfully with their communities.
Global Recognition and University Pathways
The IB Diploma qualification is one of the most widely recognised international high school qualifications in the world. It is accepted by top universities globally, including institutions in the UK, Europe, North America, and beyond.
The IBDP:
- Meets general matriculation requirements for British universities
- Allows students in the United States to earn university credit, similar to Advanced Placement (AP) courses
- Is recognised by the Joint Matriculation Board of Southern Africa for matriculation exemption
Many IB graduates gain direct entry to prestigious universities and may receive advanced standing or course credit, reflecting the academic rigour of the programme.
A Transformational Learning Journey Beyond the Classroom
The IB Diploma Programme is about more than academic achievement. It is a transformative educational journey that develops independent learners, strong time-management skills, resilience, and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world.
By the time they graduate, IB Diploma students are confident, adaptable, and prepared to think critically, act responsibly, and engage globally — qualities that ensure success at university and beyond.
