“The Middle Years Progamme (MYP) shares the same philosophy as the Primary Years Programme (PYP). It is student-centred, aimed at developing the ‘whole child’ intellectually, socially, aesthetically and culturally.”
Exploring, Connecting, Growing: The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)
As students grow into young adolescents, learning becomes an engaging journey of exploration, connection, and personal growth. The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) is designed for students aged 11–16 and provides a dynamic, skills-focused framework that helps learners connect classroom knowledge to real-world contexts. Delivered over five years, the MYP develops confident, capable, and curious learners who are well prepared for the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and future academic pathways.
A Broad and Balanced International Curriculum
The IB Middle Years Programme curriculum offers a rich and balanced academic experience across eight subject groups, ensuring a well-rounded international education during these formative years. Each subject receives a minimum of 50 hours of teaching time per year, allowing students to engage deeply with concepts and skills.
In the final two years of the programme, the MYP offers increased curricular flexibility, enabling schools to meet local educational requirements while allowing students to pursue personal interests, strengths, and aspirations. This balance supports both academic rigour and student wellbeing.
The Personal Project: Passion, Purpose, and Independent Learning
A defining feature of the IB MYP is the Personal Project, a year-long, student-led inquiry that begins in MYP 4 and concludes in MYP 5. The Personal Project allows students to explore a topic of personal interest while applying the Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills developed throughout the programme.
The project culminates in a tangible product or outcome and reflects principled, meaningful action beyond the classroom. Through the Personal Project, students:
- Develop personal interests beyond traditional subject areas
- Apply research, self-management, and reflection skills
- Share learning and insights with teachers, peers, and family
- Reflect on how learning can inspire action and create positive change
Completion of the Personal Project is a key requirement for progression into the IB Diploma Programme.
Service as Action: Learning That Makes a Difference
At the heart of the Middle Years Programme is the belief that learning is most powerful when it leads to action. Service as Action encourages students to apply their learning in authentic ways that benefit their communities and the wider world.
Through meaningful service experiences, MYP students develop empathy, responsibility, and global awareness, understanding that knowledge, when combined with care and commitment, has the power to create lasting impact.
Preparing Students for the IB Diploma Programme and Beyond
The IB Middle Years Programme is more than a curriculum—it is a crucial stage in a young person’s educational journey. The MYP supports students in discovering who they are, what they value, and how they can contribute meaningfully to the world. In doing so, it provides a strong foundation for success in the IB Diploma Programme, higher education, and life beyond school.
