Cape Town to Barcelona and Valencia
Grateful to be South African, we managed to jump the kilometer long queue to avoid missing the flight. Barcelona awaits….
Landing in Turkey saw us stand in more long queues and with no wifi, withdrawl symptoms started to kick in for some.
Beautiful snow peaked mountains glowed in the background as we descended into Barcelona. A quick pit stop...Read More
IGCSE Class of 2017 Prize Giving
Over the course of the last few days I have chatted to no less than 3 different students across the grades who have each, in their own ways, discussed what success means to them – what struck me in each of these discussions – is how dangerous their current definitions of success are and how a new discussion and debate needs to be had on what being...Read More
Dear Parents,
One of the cornerstones of an International Baccalaureate curriculum is the importance and understanding of the concept of International Mindedness. If you talk to a group of people it will be interesting to see how different each of their responses may be with regards the definition of this word. The IB states that international mindedness can be expressed as:

Dear Parents,
I trust that you all celebrated a wonderful Human Rights Day. As you can imagine being an IB World School, this topic of “rights” is often hotly debated in the HS classes, in particular in the Diploma TOK and Global Politics classes. As independent enquiring thinkers our students do not need much encouragement to challenge the status quo and seek answers to the many...Read More
Even though the weather forecast for Thursday 15th March threatened gusty winds and possible rainfall, it in fact turned out to be a lovely evening. But that meant that the casts had great fun hamming up the plays and creating fun, over-the-top characters....Read More
Dear Parents,
This week my Diploma students in their final year are busy presenting their final Theory of Knowledge (TOK) presentations. These presentations, which count 33% towards their final TOK grade, always remind me of how interesting and different the IB Curriculum is for students who are enrolled in any of the programmes on offer.
The TOK presentations encourage students to...Read More
On Friday, 2nd of March, the DP1 class hosted the CANSA Shavathon event at Hout Bay International School. The turnout was amazing – around 150 people sprayed their hair, including many primary school students. On top of this, four courageous students and three teachers shaved their heads, and five brave girls cut their hair. This hair will be donated to make wigs for those suffering...Read More
Dear Parents,
This week we welcomed the International Baccalaureate Organization’s Evaluation Team for our Primary Years Programme (PYP). Every 5 years each of our IB programmes (PYP, DP and soon to add MYP) have to be re-evaluated. As a school we get the opportunity to reflect on our delivery of these programmes to celebrate what we are doing well and see where we can make improvements....Read More
Dear Parents,
At last week’s Open Day, I was once again reminded of the many positive and wonderful things that happen at HBIS. Comment after comment from prospective families were incredibly positive. For many of our visitors they commented on how confident and knowledgeable our students were and how impressed they were with the teaching and learning that they observed. Sometimes it takes an...Read More
