On Wednesday, 30 October, Felicia Campione, Stacey Plasket, Ryan Wild, Jonathan Field, Nathalie Herles, Andreas de Beauregard and myself went to to drop off our 80 Santa Shoeboxes at the Alphen Community Centre Hall, where thousands of other boxes are being checked before being handed out to underprivileged children. What a great moment! Dozens of volunteers are working there, surrounded by mountains of colourful boxes, making sure that nothing is missing. We were really impressed to see how much effort people make in decorating their boxes and making them very special.
The very last stage of this amazing adventure for us will be the celebration day in a pre-school in Kayelitsha in a few weeks.
Thanks again for your support,
Alice Hello (Teacher and Tutor)
Lifesaving & Soccer
Louis Henkel in MYC 2 qualified for his Junior Lifeguard Award (JLA) for Clifton Surf Club. Joshua Lim (MYC 3) also qualified for Junior Lifeguard Award (JLA) but for Llandudno Surf Club and Sabrina Dierks (IGCSE 1) qualified for Lifeguard Award (LA) for
Llandudno Surf Club. They will all have to perform lifesaving duties on the respective beaches.
Congratulations to Joshua Lim (MYC 3) who is not only an ace swimmer and lifesaver but also excels at soccer. Joshua was awarded the trophy for 2013 Player of the Season by the Camps Bay Football Club. Well done also to Michail Thunert (MYC 2) who was awarded the Players’ Choice of the Season.
Not only did Nastassja Krampe (IGCSE 1) compete in the (KSISAS) Kimura Shukokai National Karate Championships recently but she has also been selected to represent South Africa as a KSISAS Karate Team member to compete at the 2014 KSI World Karate Championships to be held in the northern region of South Africa. This is an excellent achievement with South Africa currently the top ranked country in Kimura Shukokai Karate worldwide. With this selection and privilege there is individual and group responsibility to maintain and improve on all previous performances and is mandatory and a condition of selection that every team member participates I all squad training sessions to maintain the current position in this National Team. Enormous dedication required! Well done Nastassja!
Freshpak Fitness Festival
Congratulations to Adam Trojan (GCSE 1) who entered the Freshpak Fitness Festival in Clanwilliam recently and won a number of medals for mixed events. The festival, which this year celebrated 27 years of testing the abilities of beginners and professionals in swimming, cycling and running events. Apart from the fitness challenges, the event also created a perfect opportunity for a family getaway in a beautiful part of the country.
The MYC 1 Geography class had a wonderful lesson out in the field (actually in our beautiful Hout Bay valley) doing sketches of the river system and calculating the amount of water flowing down a river (its discharge in cubic metres per second). To start with they spent time examining the upper course of the Disa River and writing up their findings. A friend’s back makes a good drawing board!
