DP Students and Tertiary Education
When considering secondary education curriculum & subject choices, parents and students do so with tertiary education options in mind. Where do I want to study after school? So what should I study now?
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme well exceeds expectations when considering the appropriate secondary education choice to ease acceptance into tertiary education. It has the best of both worlds – it is a rigorous internationally recognised diploma that also offers a variety and depth of subject choices. This variety stops students marginalising their tertiary education choices too early on. Students are allowed the opportunity to better explore their strengths and weaknesses; and perhaps most importantly their interests while still at school.
The Diploma Programme has been compared with the prestige of the Cambridge A Levels but hailed for the diversity it offers in addition. Read more here. DP students must study 6 subjects from a variety of subject groups.
The diploma programme is a very balanced programme, it tries to develop the whole child, which means they have to take subjects from a variety of subject groups – Winell Gouws – High School Vice Principal and IB Diploma Programme Coordinator
I have just completed my second year of the IB Diploma. I think I am very well prepared for tertiary education – essay writing, time management skills. My college of choice is University College London to do International Relations and Political Science – Samantha Sadler – Class of 2017
Furthermore, the DP requires students do foundational subjects and projects such as Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS). It also encourages self study learning through Internal Assessments (IA) in each subject. It’s these skills students most often recognise as having helped them excel in their first year of their tertiary education studies.
Self study equips us for tertiary education because it teaches us to learn outside the classroom and outside the lines of the textbook. I’ve applied to study in Amsterdam next year. – Johannes Henkel – Class of 2016
I want to study architecture. I’ve applied to South African universities and International. Once I’d told them I did the IB, they were more than impressed, they were very, very happy – Sibongile Mrubata – Head of School (2017), Class of 2017
