“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Mahatma Gandhi
As part of our International Baccalaureate Mission Statement, Hout Bay International School aims to “develop… caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.” Not many schools’ locations afford them the opportunity to reach out to serve their wider community. Our village of Hout Bay “is a microcosm of the challenges and opportunities facing Cape Town and South Africa as a whole. It is a place of cultural diversity and economic inequalities and disparities in living conditions across apartheid-induced spatial and racial lines, all within a geographically distinct and confined area.” (taken from Hout Bay Partnership Introduction)
Hout Bay International School students are required to seek ways to service their community, in the attempt to become world wide citizens that “think globally but act locally”.
Some of our community service projects have included volunteering at local organisations such as:
- Thula Thula Hout Bay
- Ikahaya Le Themba
- Habitat for Humanity
- Hout Bay Senior Secondary School
Students have also been involved in collecting donations of goods, materials and or funds for among others:
