A safe and fun space to end the day
Aftercare at HBIS
Our Aftercare programme is a warm and welcoming space for our Early Years and Junior Primary students (EY 1 to PYP 2) to relax, play, and feel at home after the school day ends.
Aftercare runs from 13:30 to 16:30 (until 16:00 on Fridays) and is fully supervised by caring staff. Whether your child wants to read, play games, do quiet activities, or just unwind with friends, Aftercare provides a safe and happy environment.
Parents can book a spot for the whole term or choose to use Aftercare on a daily, ad hoc basis—whatever suits your family best!

As part of our enriching extra-curricular programme, students have the opportunity to pursue their passion for music through dedicated lessons in guitar, drums, violin, piano, and vocal coaching. These sessions are open to all skill levels and are guided by skilled instructors who support each student’s musical journey. Aligned with the IB ethos of developing balanced, expressive, and globally minded individuals, our music programme encourages creativity, discipline, and confidence beyond the classroom.

Extra-Curricular Activities
Our extra-curricular programme offers a wide range of activities in sports, culture, outdoor education, and community service. These opportunities help students explore their interests, build confidence, and develop important life skills such as time management, commitment, teamwork, and self-esteem. From PYP 3 (age 8), students participate in competitive sports leagues, with both Primary and High School students representing HBIS in various codes. Activities are offered on campus by both the school and external providers, with transport arranged for select off-site sessions.
Summer Sports
Tennis
Group tennis sessions focused on basic stroke develop- ment, coordination, and footwork. Sessions are led by CDK Coaching and are suitable for all skill levels.
Swimming
Off-cam- pus swim training held at Kronendal Primary School Pool, focusing on stroke development, endurance, and squad preparation for competitive swimming.
Mini-Cricket
An introduction to cricket covering fielding, batting, and bowling basics in a fun, skills-based environ- ment. Presented by All Rounders Cricket Academy and HBIS staff.
Summer Sport
Physical Education–style sessions that focus on developing movement, balance, coordination, and basic ball-handling skills through fun, age-appropriate games.
Cricket
Structured cricket programme with technical training and weekly league fixtures for U10 and U13 teams. Students attend two practices and one match per week, with regular commitment required for match play.
Volleyball
A social and inclusive coaching environment for both girls and boys, focusing on fundamental volleyball skills, team play, and game understanding.
Athletics
Track and field training includes school-run sessions and high-performance coaching by SW Athletics Coaching Academy, helping students improve speed, agility, and technique.
Basketball
Co-ed basketball training technical skills, strategy, and teamwork, with opportunities for match play and ongoing skill development.
Winter Sports
Football
An engaging introduction to football focusing on basic skills, coordina- tion, and teamwork through fun drills and small-sided games. Training is led by HBUFC Coaches and HBIS Staff.
Cross Country
Endurance-based running activity that develops fitness and mental resilience. Weekly competitions take place at different venues as per the league schedule, usually on Fridays.
Mini-Hockey
A beginner-friendly introduction to hockey, focusing on basic stick skills, movement, and teamwork in a fun and supportive setting.
Hockey
Co-ed hockey training covering technical development, gameplay tactics, and regular league fixtures. Students receive both skill-focused and match-oriented coaching.
Netball
A dynamic team sport emphasizing agility, passing, and teamwork. Weekly training and league matches are scheduled for U9, U11, and U13 teams. Players must attend practice sessions to participate in matches.
Arts and Cultural Activities
Art
A creative space for students to explore a wide range of artistic techniques and materials, fostering self-expression, fine motor skills, and visual storytelling across all age groups.
Ballet
A graceful introduction to the basics of ballet, helping young children develop coordination, posture, rhythm, and self-discipline in a fun and supportive environment.
Cooking
Hands-on sessions where students learn basic cooking skills, nutrition, and kitchen safety while preparing simple and healthy dishes from around the world.
Creative Movement
An expressive activity combining music, movement, and play to enhance motor skills, body awareness, and creativity in young students.
Drama & Musical Productions
Students collaborate to rehearse and perform theatrical and musical pieces, building confidence, teamwork, and performance skills through creative storytelling and stagecraft.
Garden Club
A hands-on, nature-based club where students learn about gardening, plant care, and environmental sustainability. Through planting, growing, and maintaining a school garden, students develop practical skills, responsibility, and an appreciation for the environment.
One-Act Plays
A chance to write, direct, or act in short plays, offering students a creative outlet to develop theatrical skills and explore storytelling in a condensed performance format.
Craft Club
A relaxed, hands-on club where students create a variety of crafts using different materials and techniques, fostering creativity, patience, and problem-solving.
Crochet Club
An introductory club where students learn basic crochet techniques to create simple projects, encouraging patience, creativity, and fine motor development.
Clay Creations
A tactile, hands-on activity where students use clay to sculpt, mold, and design imaginative or functional artworks, enhancing creativity and artistic expression.
Public Speaking
Students learn to construct persuasive arguments, speak confidently, and engage in structured debates, improving communication, logic, and self-confidence.
Guitar Tuition
Personalized guitar lessons led by Mike Pilot, focusing on building core skills such as chords, rhythm, strumming, and musical expression. Suitable for beginners and more advanced players.
Piano Tuition
Individual piano lessons with Lisha Herbst, designed to develop students’ musicality, technique, and reading skills through a tailored approach that supports students at all levels.
Vocal Coaching
Individual vocal coaching with Eileen Pilot, helping students develop vocal technique, control, and performance confidence through breathing, tone, and articulation exercises.
Drumming Tuition
Dynamic drumming lessons taught by Angus Warden, covering rhythm, coordination, and percussion technique across various musical genres in an engaging, hands-on format.
Violin Tuition
Structured violin instruction with Femke Bakker-Limburg, guiding students through foundational bowing, fingering, and reading music, with opportunities to explore both classical and contemporary styles.
Choir
A collaborative singing group open to all students, where participants learn vocal harmony, rhythm, and performance etiquette through a wide range of musical pieces performed at school events.
Experi-Buddies
A fun, hands-on science programme where young students explore basic scientific concepts through safe, interactive experiments that spark curiosity and critical thinking.
Chess
Chess club offers students of all levels the opportunity to learn and improve strategic thinking, concentration, and problem-solving skills through friendly matches and guided instruction.
STEAM’D Club
A creative, interdisci- plinary club combining Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics, and Design. Students engage in innovative, project-based challenges that build 21st-century skills.
Guild of Gamers
A social club for students who enjoy tabletop and strategy games. It encourages logic, collaboration, and friendly competi- tion in a screen-free, community-driven setting.

Horse Riding / Pony Club
An educational and recreational programme focused on horse riding. Pony Club is both a fun and structured way for students to engage with equestrian activities.
Yoga
Offered by Child’s Play Yoga, this programme introduces students to yoga through movement, breathing, and mindfulness, blending traditional poses with fun games to keep sessions engaging and age-appropriate.
Surfing
Surfing lessons with Cape Town Surf Adventures (CTSA) at local beaches such as Hout Bay and Llandudno. All necessary equipment is provided. A great way to build ocean confidence, balance, and fitness.
Power Club Fitness
Fitness sessions inspired by CrossFit, featuring age-appropriate strength, agility, and conditioning exercises. Includes weekly challenges and potential visits to the Hout Bay CrossFit Box.
Outdoor Education
An adventurous, weather-dependent programme offering a variety of outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, and snorkelling, encourag- ing resilience, teamwork, and a connection to nature.
Tennis – Semi-Private Coaching
Small group tennis sessions (max 6 students per 30-minute session), focused on stroke development and gameplay. Coaching provided by Chris De Koker for more personalized instruction.
HBIS Football Club
A fun and inclusive football club that introduces foundational skills and promotes gameplay in a supportive environ- ment. Run by HBFC Coaches.
Playball
A popular club focused on early physical development through fun activities that build coordination, balance, and basic ball skills. Presented by Lauren De Wet.
Touch Rugby
A fast-paced, non-contact version of rugby that emphasises teamwork, agility, and strategy. It is suitable for all skill levels and focuses on developing fitness, coordination, and game awareness in a safe and inclusive environment. Players learn passing, positioning, and game tactics while enjoying the fun and competitive nature of the sport.

The PYP 1 bursary programme is a partnership between CHELO (a registered non-profit organisation of parents) and Hout Bay International School providing children from historically disadvantaged communities in Hout Bay with access to a world-class international education
– While HBIS generously covers the tuition fees for our bursary students, CHELO supports all additional financial, social, and educational needs—ensuring each child has the resources and support to thrive.
