Fostering a love of reading in the PYP
The library and its resources are the heartbeat of an International Baccalaureate school. A space for inquiry, creativity, research and imagination.
In the PYP fostering the love of reading is key to a student’s future success within all the IB programmes. Reading encourages imagination, and independent learning and will hopefully grow a student’s desire for knowledge and research, crucially important for success later on.
Reading enhances a student’s transdisciplinary learning, inspiring lines of inquiry and motivating them to become independent and responsible for their own learning. Students will discover how to collate relevant information from many different sources, both in books and digitally, through reading.
Characters in books give PYP students relatable examples of the learner profile and provide them with inspiration, allowing their imaginations to take their learning on its own journey. Driving questions and inquiry about similar situations in their own world.
At HBIS, Book Week brings the joy of reading into the classroom, the students immerse themselves in the story, relating it to their units of inquiry and take part in activities which enhance the learning experience.
Fostering a student’s love of reading both for pleasure and knowledge can only enhance their learning experience. Teaching them key skills and enabling them to envision themselves in another’s shoes.
