How the International Baccalaureate is applied at HBIS
Hout Bay International School currently offers the Primary Years Programme (PYP) ages 3 – 12, and the Diploma Programme (DP) ages 16 – 19 of the International Baccalaureate (IB).
While the school structure is comparable to other South African Primary and High Schools, a marked difference can be found in the curricula of the IB.
While the Diploma Programme students also study 6 subjects, these are built on top of the base of The Core – including the Extended Essay (EE), an additional subject entitled Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and CAS or creativity, activity and service. Entry into tertiary education and the successful application for tertiary education bursaries on an international scale are regularly awarded to Diploma Programme (DP) graduates due to their exemplary preparedness for learning after school.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) prepares students from an early age through age appropriate learning for the rigor of the Diploma Programme (DP) yet to come. Rather than be fed knowledge through text book learning, the PYP uses Inquiry Based Learning making students active in their learning process, engaging them, and encouraging them to seek answers for themselves.
