What is the IB Learner Profile?
You may have heard this term used at Hout Bay International School in reference to the characteristics of the students that study at our school under the International Baccalaureate. But what is the IB Learner Profile? And how is it instilled in students being taught at HBIS?
More than simply offering students knowledge, the IB promises to develop internationally minded people who, recognising their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.
Teaching this awareness and attitude begins as young as Early Years. As they grow, students start to recognise their influence as educated minds and their opportunity to make change in the world.
Structures of the curricula allow students to more actively engage in their learning, and they bring their attitudes and personalities into the work they produce.
They are taught not to take knowledge for granted but to inquire.
With these answers in hand, they are encouraged to place themselves in context, research further and reflect on what they learn with an open mind.
They are then encouraged to take their knowledge and communicate it; be risk-takers; who take action – all the while with care and principle.
The International Baccalaureate realises the importance of placing students within an international network, making them feel a part of shared knowledge worldwide, and the importance of their role as a generation of future leaders.
