How the IB prepares students for the workload of the DP
Completing 6 subjects as well as the prerequisite Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS) component, the Extended Essay (EE) and the foundational subject Theory of Knowledge (TOK) over the two years of the Diploma Programme (DP) is a heavy workload.
The DP is structured in this way for the International Baccalaureate to best prepare students for the outside world and the demands of tertiary education.
To further aid their preparation for life after school, DP students do a number of self study projects – the extended essay, their CAS and Internal Assessment projects within their six subject choices. They are required to choose topics, structure projects and evaluate outcomes on their own.
DP students are rarely overwhelmed by this demanding curriculum, as the International Baccalaureate Curricula has groomed them for these challenges in the earlier years of their education.
Students complete multiple self study projects over the course of their Primary Years Programme (PYP) years, concluding with a final group project in their final year of PYP between the age of 10-11. This is a rigorous 6 week independent research project run by the students concluding in a final Exhibition showcasing and presenting their findings to parents and staff.
Independent learning is introduced from as young as the Early Years curriculum of the PYP between the ages of 3 – 5 in order to promote inquiring and enthusiastic students who will develop over the years to flourish when they reach the challenges of the DP.
