From the Principal’s Desk – 20 September, 2018
Dear Parents,
What an amazing high to end off yet another busy term at HBIS. There has been so much happening this term, it has been hard to keep track of all the comings and goings of our HBIS family. The National Eskom Science Expo for the HS students, Science Evening for PS students, the MYC Art Exhibition and the DP Final art Exhibition during the renowned First Thursdays, the annual CHELO fundraiser, Subject Choice evenings to name but a few. Undoubtedly the cherry on the cake has to be the two musical productions this week and last.
The two night run of Olivia and the three night run of Annie once again showed how talented our students are but more importantly gave many students an opportunity to step up and be “seen”. The various cameos and little moments that contributed to each show were incredibly special. No matter how many times we do this I am incredibly blown away by the many lessons our students hopefully learn from such an experience. These include the realisation that should you want to do something well it will require hard work, effort, possibly some “blood” and even a few “tears”. It also teaches students to “roll with the punches” when something goes wrong live on stage – you just need to push through and keep on going. And finally it is important to learn to demand a certain level of excellence from each other and more importantly of yourself. Settling for second or third best should not ever be our default setting – we must always aim high, it is often during those times that we realise things about ourselves that we never would have known before – these are those powerful “aha” moments. I believe that many of the 150 plus students who participated in the 5 nights of performances have learnt this lesson. We are all incredibly proud of both the PS and HS students who acted, danced and sang their way through our hearts. My sincere thanks to the staff who motivated, encouraged and inspired the students to reach for the stars and dare to dream big! And thank you to each and every student who participated.

In other news in the school, our IGCSE 2 class have officially completed their curriculum and will return on 1 October to write their final IGCSE Cambridge International Examinations. These will run for the month of October and half of November. Our graduating class – the DP2 Class of 2018, will return in Term 4 to write their Mock Examinations and then finish their year off with their Valedictory Service. Thereafter they will sit their final International Baccalaureate Diploma Examinations. To both classes I want to say; you have almost reached your destination BUT there is still much work ahead – the sacrifices you are willing to make over the next few weeks will mean the difference between achieving what you are capable of or settling for something not worthy of you. You have nothing to lose so just go for it! Study hard and may you reap what you sow.
On that note I wish all our families all the best for the upcoming vacation – travel safe, and rest well. See you all at school on 3 October 2018 for the last term of 2018.
Kind regards,
Grant Ruskovich
