From the Principal’s Desk – 24 May, 2018
Dear Parents,
Tonight the High School students are celebrating all things diverse at their annual Diversity Evening. An evening filled with dance, singing, dramatics, food and of course homage to the various cultures surrounding us.
The International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) was founded on the principles of valuing diversity and embracing our differences – after all that is what makes the world such an amazing and complex place to live in. One often hears people talking about creating a world that needs to be more “tolerant” of each other, but I have a particular reservation about that word used in this context. To “tolerate” something means that you simply “put up with it” or “allow it to exist”. If we are going to create a better world we need to do more than to just “tolerate” each other, we need to first seek to understand and then to respect and embrace that which makes us unique.
And so as we enjoy the entertainment tonight, I would hope we are all reminded that diversity “like the ingredients of your favourite dish” can make the overall sum of a place, school, country and even the world a more interesting and tastier place to be.
Enjoy tonight’s festivities
Kind regards,
Grant Ruskovich
