How the PYP includes students within a global network through learning
In the 21st century the world has become a smaller place. Students are acutely aware that they are part of a bigger picture. It is now more possible than ever to participate culturally and economically on a global scale. And this will only become more of a tendency as children progress through school today.
The units of enquiry explored throughout the curricula of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) across all ages encourage self awareness and self reflection. Themes such as ‘Who we are’ and ‘How we express ourselves’ encourage students to be aware of how they fit into the global picture. Students have an understanding of the specifics of their upbringing; the biases that may have become inherent. This makes them better equipped to place themselves alongside a multitude of different cultures with empathy. They are able to have sophisticated relationships even with those different from themselves.
Furthermore, the International Baccalaureate promotes self awareness through the IB Learner Profile, where students are encouraged to strive to be well balanced individuals: Inquirers; Knowledgeable; Thinkers; Communicators; Principled; Open-minded; Caring; Risk-takers; Balanced; and Reflective – contributing to a new generation of global leaders.
